Join as Jen visits favorite spots in Uptown. This neighborhood is celebrated for its diversity, its #UptownProud community pride, and its rich history dating back to the glitz and glam era as Chicago’s premier entertainment destination.

In this episode, restaurateur Chef Tigist Reda takes Jen into the kitchen of the iconic Demera to share her authentic Ethiopian cuisine. A long-standing institution in Uptown, Demera consistently tops the best-restaurants lists from Eater, Time Out, Chicago Magazine and more. Chef Reda tells Jen about raising money for “Hope For Tigray Women”, a non-profit providing humanitarian relief for women affected by the civil war in Ethiopia.    

Down the street, Jen gets a pre-construction tour of the historic Gerber Building, built in 1921 and recently restored by the CTA, which is the future home of the Chicago Market grocery co-op. Matthew Ruffi, Chicago Market Board President, explains the community ownership model for the full service grocery store, which will also be a community hub — a vibrant center of exceptional food, workshops, meetings and performances.
